I have a confession to make. I love sleeping. It’s the most wonderful thing in the world and I place it right up there with breathing. Absolutely nothing beats the feeling when you’ve had a long day at work, you finally got through bath and bedtime with the kids and they are tucked up in bed, then you change into your flannel pj’s and then slowly get into your bed while breathing a sigh of relief. There is usually a good book next to my bed together with a lamp so that I can read until I drift off to sleep.

While I was in bed last night, happy as Larry, I wondered to myself, what is it that makes the perfect bedroom to retreat to? Here are some thoughts…

Comfort is key
It is so so important for a bedroom to be comfortable. It is after all where you go to retreat and get some rest. If you go for luxury with high quality linens that feel soft and comfy when you get into bed, it makes the experience that much nicer. Have an oversized throw that can add extra warmth on cold nights and layer with lots of texture, the more the better. Spend as much as you can and invest on a good quality mattress, it’s just so much more rewarding being able to wake up from a decent nights sleep.

Pillows, lots and lots
We are pillow hoarders in our home. Between Jon & I we have 8 pillows between us. We just love to pile the pillows up around us so that we can sit in bed or just be surrounded by lovely soft linens. If you are a lover of pillows like me, just make sure that you mix the types of covers you use to add some dimension to the textures within the bed. I go for lovely soft linens in soft colours and then throw in some natural cotton that has been washed so many times that it’s now soft at the touch.

Ambient lighting sets the mood
When it comes to lighting your bedroom, it’s really important to get it right. Use lots of ambient or pools of light through the use of lamps. Always have your main light source on a dimmer switch so that you can control the amount of light shining into the room.
When it comes to controlling natural light, go for window treatments that have the ability to black out. There are a large variety of window treatments out there that are specifically designed to be used in the bedroom, most window treatments using fabric can have a blackout fabric attached to ensure the room is dark even when the sun is shining brightly outside.

Restrict the Colour Palette
Keep the colour palette restricted when thinking about your bedroom. I like to use paler shades when creating a bedroom but earthy dark shades can look just as fabulous when paired with the right decor. To create the laid-back bedroom keep the contrast minimal and paint out built in furniture so that it’s the same colour as the walls.

A place for Everything
Do you find that you have piles of clothes in the middle of the room because there is no other place for them? Keep your room uncluttered by ensuring there is a place for everything. Have hooks in place for clothes you want to re-wear next to your wardrobe. Have a basket at the ready for any clothes you want to put in the laundry. A bedside table to hold any books you might be reading. I have a set of hooks that sit next to my mirror to hang my jewellery and handbags. It makes access really easy for when I want to get ready to go out to dinner with friends.

Till next time, Doris
