I am writing this post in my studio listening to the drumming of the rain against the window outside. Its grey and moody and I can’t help but be glad that I’m inside. When the weather is like this, don’t we all need a place to snuggle up and rest. So it got me thinking, how would you go about creating the ultimate snug? A snug is a small cosy space in the home for one to relax in. The kids can use it to watch tv in or the adults can use it to chill out in after hours. You can create a little snug area anywhere, be it on a sofa, in a bed, or even on the floor.
Some key elements are:
A Deep Sofa or lounge chair- The deeper the sofa the better. It’s about having somewhere that’s really comfortable where you can lay back and even have a little snooze if you want to.
Lots of cushions- have at least one large square pillow that you can lay back on then add a variety of different pillows into the mix. The more the better in my opinion. If you are creating a snug on the floor, then you can use floor cushions on top of a rug to create the same feel.
Layer up the Fabric- Lots of soft layers in different fabrics will make the snug special. Start with using a thick soft rug. I tend to go for wool rugs in a berber style or you can go for sheepskin. As long as it’s soft and natural in look and feel. Then upholster the sofa or armchair in a soft boutique wool or linen. Next mix up the cushion covers with a variety of materials, velvet, linen, cotton. The thicker and softer the better. Then throw on top of it all a warm chunky throw to add that extra depth of cosy.
Dimmable Lighting and candles- use lighting that you can control the brightness of or multiple lamps. My preference in the evening is to sit in front of our wood burning stove however if you don’t have one of those, multiple tea light or tall candles will do the job nicely. And don’t forget that a lovely scented candle can take you away. There is nothing more relaxing then having the soft scent of rose or jasmine wafting through the house while reading a good book or watching tv.
Once you have your snug setup, change into your pjs, grab a cup of hot chocolate then enjoy your night in. The ultimate in Laidback Living.
Till next time, Doris
